“Hi, Fred. Did Mallory come out of the dressing room?”

“Yes.” Fred’s voice sounded tight. “We’re just wrapping up here. Larry’s not happy about being dropped from the show. He may sue.”

Good luck with that, Larry, Amber thought. “I’ll talk to him.”

“Why didn’t you tell me about bringing Gary in? I had no idea, and when Larry cornered me about it, I had to ad-lib.”

“I texted you right after Durke suggested bringing in someone Mallory was more comfortable with. Sounds like it worked.” And why didn’t you think of that yourself, Fred? We nearly lost our star tonight.

“Well, the rest went fine. We got pictures, the kids took selfies, and the limo left for the party with everyone aboard.” Thank goodness. Durke was proving to be a valuable asset.

“Good. So what happened with the makeover? Why did Mallory bolt?”

“I don’t know. Larry was discussing how to style her hair, and she just ran out of the room. I mean, it’ll make great TV, but it was kind of hazardous around here with all the broken glass. We had to pay for a bunch of light bulbs that just... exploded. I think Mallory has an anger management problem.”

Amber took a moment to digest this. “We’ve dealt with anger issues before on the show. What exactly made her angry?”

“No idea.”

She had already asked to see the footage from the makeover. “Hmmm. Fred, I think we might want to shake things up a bit. I’m sending you to Texas with the Houston Hexers to follow them for the next round. We could use your magic touch to bring out the drama in their story. Their earth mage can communicate with cows.”

“Any reason for the switch? I’ve got a good rapport here with the school.”

Because a sixteen-year-old can do your job better than you can, Amber thought. “Thought you might like a break from the ice and snow. Lynette should be there tomorrow, along with Gary. You can talk her through everything.”

“Amber, I’m fine.”

“Glad to hear it. You can meet the Hexers at the airport when you fly back with them tomorrow evening.”
